Tokyo Speirs RoundTrip is the plugin you commit before you mix — and that single idea might change your workflow more than any new EQ or compressor ever could. Most producers stack plugin after plugin on every channel, tweaking endlessly and second-guessing each move until the mix loses its direction. RoundTrip replaces all of that with one decisive move: print the full analog signal path to your tracks before the first fader moves, and mix forward from there.
Created by multi-Platinum, Juno Award-winning producer and engineer Tokyo Speirs of Walk Off The Earth, RoundTrip is the exact commit-style chain he has used on his own records for years. Instead of maintaining fragile chains of hardware and software dependencies, licences, and insert slots, everything now lives in one plugin: a meticulously modelled journey from microphone preamp to final tape print.
The signal path runs preamp → console channel → Shine → summing → tape → climiter. Start with your preamp: the Funky V76, inspired by 60s European tube amplification, or the unmistakable British N73 that opens countless classic records. Then pick your console channel — a punchy, mid-forward American desk or the snap and clarity of a Solid 4E-style inline console. The Shine stage is a dedicated parallel harmonic processor tuned for high-end excitement and low-end bloom, reacting dynamically to your source. Summing offers three era-defining options: a British broadcast 6B tube console, the revered Brit 8048, or 4000-series VCA summing. Print it all to one of two classic tape machines — the Amped 102 workhorse on GP9 or the Sturdy A800 on 456 formula — and finish with the Climiter, transparent at low levels and a full signal flattener when pushed.
Version 1.1 adds Gear Swap and Drift, which make every instance behave like a unique piece of hardware rather than a perfect digital copy. Gear Swap rolls component values within real-world tolerances, so no two instances sound identical; Drift adds a slow, bounded wander around the target spec, the way real analog gear warms up and settles. The result: no more “digital buildup” of identical EQ curves stacking up across your session. Everything is gain-matched to pink noise for honest A/B comparisons.
RoundTrip also works beyond tracking. Skip the summing stage after recording, place it on your mix bus, and recreate the final pass — hitting the summing console and printing the mixdown back to tape, exactly like the classic records were made.
If your mixes feel flat, sterile, or directionless, the problem usually isn’t your plugins — it’s the lack of commitment. RoundTrip gives you a faster, more confident workflow and a cohesive analog fingerprint across every track. Print it, commit, and move on.
