Sonic Academy SideKick

The Free Plugin Your Low End Has Been Waiting For

Muddy low end ruins more tracks than any other mixing mistake. The fix is sidechain ducking — and Sonic Academy SideKick does it better than plugins costing real money, for exactly zero. Draw your own volume envelope, trigger it from the kick, and choose classic volume shaping or intelligent spectral ducking.

Sidechain Without the Headache

Normal sidechain compressors make you fiddle with attack, release, threshold and ratio until the groove feels right. SideKick skips all that: you literally draw the ducking curve. Want a long smooth pump for house? A tight rhythmic chop for techno? Draw it, done. It looks like the groove and sounds like the groove.

Spectral Ducking Explained Simply

Here’s the magic trick: instead of turning down the whole bass every time the kick hits, spectral ducking only turns down the frequencies where the kick and bass actually collide. Everything else keeps playing at full volume. Translation: louder, fuller, cleaner low end — the thing that separates amateur and pro mixes.

A Whole Effect Rack in Disguise

Sonic Academy SideKick isn’t a one-trick pony. The ring modulation mode turns it into a creative rhythmic effect. Delta monitoring lets you solo what you’re removing (great for learning). Mid/Side processing, the sidechain trigger filter and waveform displays make it a precision tool. And 100+ presets mean instant starting points for every genre.
