Tuff Nerds LEADR

The Lead Instrument That Plays Like a Game and Thinks Like a Band

Tuff Nerds LEADR is a lead-focused sampler and synth hybrid wrapped in a joyful retro interface — but underneath the pixel art sits a serious idea machine. LEADR blends one-shot samples, oscillators and physically modelled instruments, then adds a chord engine and a cascading arpeggiator, so the distance between “I have a melody in my head” and “it’s in the track” collapses to a single key press.

Sampler, Synth and Instruments in One Patch

LEADR’s sound starts in the CRAFT section, where three sources mix freely. The dual-slot sampler carries over 500 custom one-shots from the OTAKU packs (and loads your own). The oscillator engine adds synth weight. The Instruments source — physically modelled guitar, strings, voice, choir and flute — adds the organic layer most lead synths can’t reach. Set them up in the Instrument Stage like a mini band in a room, with speaker width and carpet damping shaping the space, and layer Textures such as rain, birds, room tone or chimes underneath for instant mood.

Chord Lock Does the Harmony Homework

Chord Lock is LEADR’s party trick and its productivity engine. Hit one key and a full chord sounds — scale-locked, fixed or custom voicings, with strum and voice leading keeping changes musical. Because Chord Lock outputs real MIDI chords to your DAW, it can also conduct your other instruments: send the same progression into Serum or Diva, stack the layers, and your one-finger performance becomes a full arrangement. Songwriters and beatmakers who don’t play keys suddenly harmonise like they do.

WATERFALL Arps and a Drawable Arp Engine

The WATERFALL arpeggiator cascades notes into a sustained, overlapping wash — arpeggios that feel like weather, not machinery. Prefer precision? The custom arp is drawable, with gate, swing, dynamics, grouping, two-hand play, latch, stab and a DICE button that deals you a new pattern whenever inspiration stalls. Arp presets save and recall, and the live visualiser shows exactly what the engine is doing.

FX, Modulation and Controlled Chaos

An 18-effect rack finishes patches inside the instrument, and the Mod button lets you draw your own modulation shape and point it at almost anything. When a session needs a left turn, CHAOS randomises you somewhere interesting. Everything you build can be saved and recalled across sessions.

Library and Updates

Over 200 presets and 500+ one-shots (about 1.3 GB) ship in the box, aimed at EDM, house, techno, trance, hyperpop and modern pop leads. LEADR is a living instrument: updates are free for life, and past updates have added whole engines, the Instruments source, expansions and Logic support.
